Diet after wisdom teeth removal

The right foods can make the first few recovery days easier. Start with soft, easy-to-eat foods, stay hydrated, and avoid foods that can irritate the healing sites.

Most patients do best by advancing gradually and stepping back to softer foods if chewing increases soreness.

First 24 hours

Choose cool or lukewarm soft foods that require very little chewing.

  • Yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Pudding
  • Smoothies eaten with a spoon
  • Protein shakes
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Broth or lukewarm soup
  • Ice cream or sorbet in moderation

Days 2–3

If you are doing well, you can slowly add slightly more filling soft foods.

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat
  • Cottage cheese
  • Soft pasta or noodles
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Soft fish
  • Well-cooked vegetables
  • Tender shredded chicken if comfortable

Foods to avoid early on

Avoid foods that are crunchy, sharp, spicy, or likely to leave small particles behind.

  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Crunchy granola
  • Crusty bread
  • Very hot foods
  • Spicy foods
Our office also recommends avoiding rice and quinoa early in healing because the small pieces can collect in the sockets.

Hydration

Drink water often during recovery. Staying hydrated helps you feel better and makes it easier to eat and take medications.

  • Avoid straws during the early healing period.
  • Avoid alcohol while recovering and while taking prescription pain medications.
  • Choose cool or lukewarm drinks rather than very hot drinks at first.

When can I return to more normal foods?

Most patients gradually return to a more normal diet over several days, depending on soreness, swelling, and how complex the surgery was.

If chewing causes pain, go back to softer foods for another day or two.

Call your surgeon if

  • You cannot keep fluids down
  • Pain suddenly gets worse instead of better after your 4th day
  • Bleeding is heavy or persistent
  • You develop fever or worsening swelling
  • You are not sure how to keep the sites clean
